Cutting out cigarettes will reduce your risk of a heart attack by half. It’s probably the biggest single step you can take for your health. Of course, quitting smoking can be a challenge. Don’t let that stop you! There are more tools available than ever to help you succeed. Talk to your doctor about making a plan, which might include medication or nicotine replacement.

Your appetite and sense of taste may change when you stop smoking. It’s important to avoid replacing one unhealthy behavior with another, such as overeating or poor food choices. Snack smart, eat mindfully, and control your weight with helpful tips from smokefree.gov.

Start small: Set a date. Call the quit line at 1-800-QUITNOW and make an appointment with your doctor, so you’re set up for success. Have some healthy snacks on hand to help curb the cravings and keep you on track for this new, healthier lifestyle.

Finish remarkable: Plan a little celebration for your first week, your first month, and your first year after you quit. You deserve it! And don’t forget to try new foods with your improved sense of taste and smell, both of which are added benefits when you quit smoking.
