Keep a food diary
What did you eat yesterday? How about last week? If you can’t remember, take comfort: you’re not alone. It’s nearly impossible to accurately remember it all, but knowing what you eat - and how much, and when - is essential if you want to develop healthier habits. That’s why a food diary makes sense. Research shows that writing down what you eat is the single most effective strategy for losing weight in both the short and long term. In fact, people who keep a food diary can experience twice the weight loss of people of who don’t. As it turns out, acknowledging those late-night snacks, and second helpings, often results in eating fewer of them.
Give it a try! Keep a food and beverage diary for two weeks. Helpful tips: take a photo of what you consume when not home to help log your food later, or send a text message any time you eat something to log in your diary before ending your day. Sharing your diary with your doctor can help in gathering advice on improving your diet to reach your personal goals.
