Celebrating 2024 Growth
Basecamp Prevention + Wellness removes barriers of cost, opens doors to preventative health resources, and unlocks a wealth of classes and programs meant to heal, improve, and connect our communities. Opportunities made possible for everyone, everywhere, through generous donations to the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation.
Launched in 2017 by the Providence Heart Institute with a goal of creating impact on the improved health of our communities with an emphasis on preventative lifestyle behaviors. We do this by utilizing a thematic, and relatable, approach called The 80% Opportunity: eighty percent of heart disease, and most chronic disease, is preventable by how we move, what we eat, and the way we live.
Basecamp’s current subscriber base is worldwide! With virtual programming, the geographic barrier has been dramatically reduced; allowing access to everyone, everywhere. Those local to Portland, Oregon can join in-person classes and events held at one of two locations in northeast and west Portland. Basecamp subscribers are a collection of community members, providers, and Providence employees; and with no requirement of being a Providence patient to participate.
The subscriber growth over eight years has been a steady climb with the past two years seeing a sharp increase, soaring nearly threefold since 2022. This is due in part to the unique communication models, virtual offerings crossing borders and time zones, along with a flourishing trust in our product and programs for their reliability, expertise, and quality standards.
For the past several years, efforts have included programmatic analysis and year-over-year comparisons through strategic approaches including enhanced participant registration forms, inclusion of key demographic questions, and an expansion of survey collection within our various audiences. This data allows us to meticulously review programming for successes, challenges, and areas for improvement, while also considering our reach and impact on vulnerable populations.
Following completion of our 2024 annual survey analysis along with review of our routine data collection, we are proud to share these highlights showcasing how our 2024 vision of creating an impact on community health was realized through participation, program/instructor ratings, behavioral change inquiry, and testimonials from those engaging in our classes and programs.
In addition to the data points noted in the Basecamp by the Numbers image , we’d like to share a shining example of a program from within each of our three primary areas of focus: movement, nutrition, and wellbeing.
How We Move (exercises classes and community programs): Heart to Start launched in 2012 and is a 12-week gradual interval 5K training program for walkers and runners of all paces. Intentionally scheduled during the heart of the winter season to help keep participants motivated and moving while working toward a 5K goal. The season is held November to February annually, and the 2024-2025 season garnered more than 3,500 participants across 23 states and three countries.
What We Eat (nutrition focused programs and resources): In the Kitchen is a comprehensive program led by registered dietitians and a chef. Participants are invited to Learn it. See it. Do it. with a combined curriculum of nutrition education, cooking classes, and recipes taking you from the classroom to the kitchen table. These virtual classes averaged 76 attendees each month and more than doubled in registration over the past two years.
The Way We Live (wellbeing programs for self-care and community stewardship): Healthy Conversations is a quarterly, live broadcast hosted by Dr. James Beckerman, medical director for heart programs, Providence Heart Institute, who welcomes an expert on a topic related to preventative wellness or heart health. Together, they engage in conversation bringing important topics forward to the general public in easy-to-understand language along with a Q&A session at the end. This program saw a 65% YOY attendee growth in 2024.
